Shiva Burlesque (1987-1990) USA

Before there was Grant Lee Buffalo, there was Shiva Burlesque... the post-punk counterparts to the LA paisley underground. From the mastermind of Grant Lee Phillips, Shiva Burlesque is 'a psychedelically tinged, folky, punky, lyrical, spooky, melancholic musical brew' that managed to put out two of the most exquisite albums to come out of the late 80's Los Angeles indie music scene and have managed to be in my top 100 favorite albums of all time.

Shiva Burlesque were :

Grant Lee Phillips - electric acoustic guitars and vocals
Joey Peters - Drums Percussion
Dick Smack - Bass
Jeffrey Clark - Vocals
Greg Adamson - Cello

  2. After I discovered the American new wave - post punk scene and its peculiarities as opposed to the European scene, Shiva Burlesque have been one of my favourite bands along with The Drowning Pool, The Sleepers and Savage Republic too.
Great Post!! Thank you for sharing these albums.

  4. Psychopomp,
first off I wanted to send you a big Thanks for all for your support and linking my blog.
Being a native So. Californian I have a huge appreciate for many of these bands... especially Savage Republic and all of the side bands that rooted from them, especially Autumnfair. Independent Project records had to of been one of the best damn labels to ever come out of LA.

  5. Thanks for your kind words 'Slow Pulse Girl', and by the way, that is a great username you've chosen. And Also the Trees are one of my most favourite groups.
It's been nice talking to you. Looking forward for great posts -except for the ones I've seen so far.
    See you soon.

  6. Very nice; glad I stumbled by here.
My name is Jeffrey Clark and I was the singer in Shiva Burlesque. Yes, we were indeed a very good band, I'm very proud of both of our albums (It's interesting that you've posted the Greek version of the first album cover) and Bruce Licher and the Independent Projects label were wonderful to work with.

If you don't mind, I'd very much like for Ten Thousand Eyes to please tell me something about this reference to "The Psychopomp".
Whether it's an in-joke or a coincidence I find that quite amusing to me.
