LEGION UK - HELL SPITS BLOOD (UK)

It was a bit difficult to really find any info at all on this unknown UK band, but what I do know is that they started back around 1981 and went through a couple line up changes with a few different female singers and a different Chris on Bass. Then in '85, Steve moved from guitar to take over vocals and Paul took over Guitar, Chris on Bass and Azzy on Drums, with a new lineup in order they decided to make a few recordings. Which are now made available on this compilation called Hell Spits Blood, that has various recorded material from 1986 thru 1987.
Legion's sound is post punk driven with references to The Chameleons and the boy-band appeal of Flesh For Lulu, but loaded with tons of energy and attitude. Give them a listen and join the league of loyal LEGIONAIRES !

  2. Moo!
I need to look Chris up and see what's what these days. Really enjoyed finding out about the band, but as you know, so much music we collect means less time with each band playing over the speakers.

The band takes its name from a Theatre of Hate song....

Some years back I was chatting with Chris about these recordings. He says of them:

Not my entire stint in the band but it is the entire collection from the final 1986/1987 phase. It’s the phase I had most influence over and therefore, pretty obviously, the material I am most happy with.

Yes the original format is reel-to-reel tape. I have most of the stereo mix-downs but none of the multi-track masters as we could not afford to buy them (multi-tack tape was very expensive, as you’ll remember).

I rented a professional reel-to-reel machine and recorded them direct into my computer via a professional quality Yamaha soundcard so the transfer is pretty good.

The problem was with the 20 year old tape; it was virtually disintegrating. I had to clean the tape heads between every track and record and re-record every track several times before I got a clean copy – i.e. when the heads would stay clean for the length of the song (many songs would go muffled towards the end).

I do have some stuff from the earlier 1984/1985 phase of the band which is more pop-punk in sound. I’ll get that stuff out of the archive sometime during 2007 but no promises when. :-)

    I’ll let you know…

  4. Hi,
I just wanted to thank you lot for this! I remember the name Legion still cropping up at the cusp of the ninetees back in the Uk. Things being what they were, our "G" music legacy was unavailable at that time... Thank you!
